I got asked this question on the gym floor today:
‘If you could begin training again, what would you do differently?’
I answered ‘Hmmmm… let me think about it’. While in my head I was thinking:
‘I WOULD NOT SPEND THREE YEARS FOCUSING ON CHEST AND ARMS, WEARING VESTS TOO SMALL FOR ME AND NEVER TRAINING LEGS AND FLARING MY LATS OUT TO PRETEND I WAS BIGGER THAN I AM’.’
But that’s another story altogether.
The real, constructive answer does flow along the same lines though. When I look around the weights area at Puregym Livingston, I often see a lot of the younger guys training the tee shirt muscles, then when they don’t make the progress they want to in 3-6 months, they either give up or start using performance enhancing drugs to get big quick.
It’s sad really. It’s sad that these behaviours are actually pretty normal. It’s sad that society has accepted the idea of quick fixes so easily (think about how quick anyone can get a pay day loan) and that so many young men and women feel pressure to look like the Geordie Shore characters and film stars they idolise.
I don’t actually have a problem with performance enhancing drugs myself. I’d never use them and i’d never recommend them but if someone is using them safely and then not cheating in any sport where they are banned- then that is their decision. Some people choose drink, some people choose drugs, some people choose other things. As long as responsibility is taken for the consequences of actions, that’s cool.
So here’s the way i’d go. And there’s three actions I would take:
Train. Eat. Sleep.
If I was a young guy again I would prioritise these three things.
Train with lots of volume and compound movements.
Eat a lot of good, nutritious food.
Get well rested sleep.
If you can do that for two years, I promise you’ll be one of the biggest, healthiest kids in the gym.
